The Economic Impact of Respiratory Illness on Buffalo’s Lower West Side
Updated August 2012
- Almost 22,000 Lower West Side (LWS) residents have respiratory illness. That number is four times higher than any other district in the City of Buffalo.
- The related healthcare costs for these individuals is estimated at $110 million a year, with $11 million of it being spent directly on asthma medication.
- In Erie County, the cost of Medicaid in 2011 totaled $206 million. More than 95% of Erie County property tax collected goes directly to pay for Medicaid.
This is a health epidemic that we, as a county, are all paying for; either with our health, safety and quality of life or with our tax dollars.
